Did you know:

  • Some people think that this pie is called Shoofly Pie because it is so delicious that, when you leave it out to cool, you have to keep waving the flies away. However, it got its name because of a particular brand of molasses sold in Pennsylvania called Shoofly Molasses. This molasses was named after a popular circus animal from the 1800s called Shoofly the Boxing Mule. The mule was named in honour of the traditional song Shoo Fly, Don’t Bother Me.
  • Shoofly pie was originally a type of cake, invented to celebrate the centennial celebrations of the signing of the declaration of independence. The crust was added in the 1880s to make it easier to eat. [1]
  • In the US, what we call treacle, they call molasses. Our molasses is a bit different. We tried using Australian molasses in our Shoofly pie, but it tasted completely different.
