Description
Did you know there are a number of stories about the origin of the name ‘Chess Pie’:
- The most popular story involves a former slave who invented a new pie using basic staples available to her. When someone asked her what the pie was called, she replied ‘It’s jus’ pie.’ Imagine this being said in a southern drawl and it sounds like ‘Chess Pie’’
- Another story is that because this pie was often kept in a ‘pie chest’ to protect it from pests; ‘Chest Pie’ became ‘Chess Pie’.
- Yet another theory is that the original recipe used chestnut flour in it; ‘Chestnut Pie’ became ‘Chess Pie’
